Trade between Mogilev Oblast, USA 20% up in January-March

MOGILEV, 7 May (BelTA) – Foreign trade between Mogilev Oblast and the USA rose by 20% in January-March 2018. The information was released by Mogilev Oblast Governor Vladimir Domanevsky as he met with U.S. Charge d’affaires to Belarus Robert Riley on 4 May, BelTA has learned.

The Mogilev Oblast governor attributed the invigoration of the mutual relations primarily to efforts taken in 2016-2018 to advance interregional cooperation. Mogilev Oblast delegations visited several cities and states of the USA then. A number of documents of intent to advance cooperation were signed as a result of the meetings and negotiations. The efforts produced positive results: trade between Mogilev Oblast and the USA started growing in Q1 2018. Merchandise import from the USA was more than doubled. Nevertheless, Mogilev Oblast managed to keep a foreign trade surplus. The U.S. share in Mogilev Oblast’s foreign trade with non-CIS states totaled 1.4% in January-March, stated Vladimir Domanevsky.

Vladimir Domanevsky drew attention to the need to invigorate interregional and investment cooperation, organize meetings of the business circles in order to determine prospects of advancing the bilateral relations.

In turn, Robert Riley told media that increasing the number of mutual visits of delegations and representatives of the private sector was the best way to expand cooperation. “American and Belarusian companies should understand how they can benefit each other and what projects can be implemented together. Since we fully resumed visa services in the embassy in Minsk in February, I will be happy to see more Belarusians visiting the USA and more Americans visiting Belarus. It is good that now Americans can use the five-day visa-free travel program to enter Belarus,” added Robert Riley.

Robert Riley is expected to partake in the opening of an All About USA partnership center in the Mogilev branch of the national science and technology library later today. As part of the program the embassy has handed over assets worth over $20,000 to the library. The assets include equipment for fitting out the partnership center and the creative space MakerSpace, books and other materials about the country’s cultural diversity.

The library partnership program All About USA is already in effect in Baranovichi, Borisov, Brest, Gomel, Grodno, Minsk, Molodechno, Pinsk, Polotsk, and Vitebsk. People, who go to libraries in these cities, can get familiar with the latest American books, can visit theme programs and exhibitions, and can talk to native speakers.
